If you are concerned about cleaning your teeth after receiving braces, our team is happy to provide instructions on which steps to take. Braces on your teeth mean you will need to adjust your tooth brushing habits to prevent braces from blocking areas your smile, and this may mean changing the angle of your toothbrush. If you are concerned about the challenge of cleaning your braces, we offer tips on how to clean braces and keep your teeth clean.

In between regular visits to the dentist for professional dental exams and cleanings, perform a weekly cleaning of your orthodontic retainer and visit the orthodontist for every scheduled appointment. Here are three steps to cleaning your teeth while wearing braces:

1. Swish water around your mouth before brushing your teeth to rinse away any debris that has built around your braces.

2. Twice a day, brush your teeth for two minutes, and be sure to floss every day to clean the hard-to-reach areas of your smile. Replace your toothbrush every three months to ensure the bristles remain in good quality and your dental hygiene isn’t reduce by worn bristles.

3. Angle your toothbrush at 45 degrees when cleaning along your gum line, and be sure to address the areas above and below the brackets to clear bacteria that builds on the gum line and in the tooth ridges.
